Heat Tracker
Record heat isn't happening somewhere — it's happening almost everywhere. This map shows the past week's peak temperature for every country, US state and Chinese province, colored by how far it ran above normal — and flags the places that just set a new all-time high.
What these numbers feel like
At 38°C in the shade, indoors without cooling, your body never stops sweating — sleep becomes shallow, thinking gets slow, and the young and elderly start to be at real risk.
At 51°C — a temperature Death Valley visitors have met — pour a glass of water over your head and it's gone in about half a minute. You stop seeing your own sweat, because it evaporates the instant it forms. Phones, smart watches and action cameras flash heat warnings and force themselves off within minutes. The human body isn't built for this either: without shade, water and cooling, such heat can kill in hours.
This map can't lower the temperature anywhere. What it can do is show, honestly and weekly, how much of the world is living through this at once — because record heat is no longer a local story.
