Phyloca: the tower defense where you are the tower

The backyard fights back. Phyloca is a sunny hex-grid tower defense where squirrels carry gatling guns, a fox is your general — and the general is you. Free, bilingual, in your browser, and if you feel like it, played outdoors with your own two feet.
The story is simple: the Rustbug Horde — cheerful junk-built robot pests — is marching on a little summer cottage to strip it for parts. The local wildlife isn't having it. Squirrels shoulder acorn gatlings, rabbits sight down carrot railguns, crows perch on tesla coils, and a skunk runs the chemistry department. You recruit them hex by hex along the trail. So far, so tower defense — we borrowed happily from the classics we grew up on: an armor-vs-damage table worth reading, interest on the scrap you don't spend, open fields where your own buildings shape the maze.
You're not the hand in the sky. You're on the field.
Here's the twist: one of the defenders is you. Before each battle you choose an Envoy — one of five animal generals, each built on a classic strategy-game archetype. Vixen the fox is a vanguard who fights harder as things get desperate; Bastion the snapping turtle locks down ground and makes everything cheaper around him; Athene the owl barely fights but calls orbital starfall; Stagheart the deer makes the whole army faster; Bruiser the badger exists to ruin a boss's day. Your Envoy walks the map, fights inside a glowing ring, levels up mid-battle and unlocks abilities — a general in the truest sense.
And because your general is a creature and not a cursor, you can drop into their point of view at any moment. One key flips you from the bird's-eye command view down to an over-the-shoulder view in the grass — same battle, same rules, different hands. Aim yourself and you hit harder. Flip back up whenever the bigger picture needs you. There's a minimap in both views so you never get lost.
The Porch Light
Our favourite mechanic came from a simple thought: robot bugs would love a light. Flip on the Porch Light and every Rustbug nearby forgets the cottage and comes for you. That's a thrill — they pay extra scrap when they fall — but it's also strategy: a lured bug makes no progress toward your gates, so a brave general with a bright lamp is a wall in themselves. The rule that keeps it honest is one sentence long: the Porch Light only burns while you hold it. Climb back to the command view and the lamp dims, the pack shrugs, and the march resumes. Carry it too proudly and you'll be carried home — going down puts the light out and scatters your fan club straight back toward the cottage.
Three ways to play (and one place to play them)
- The Summer Campaign — twelve missions, each quietly teaching one new idea. No tutorial walls; hints appear once, exactly where you need them, and never again.
- Full Bloom — the flagship. Endless defense plus a full economy for you: weapon racks that display their wares, a Lucky Stump that gambles scrap for mystery guns, a Bloomforge for upgrades, nectar taps for perks. Towers and guns drink from the same scrap pool, so every purchase is an argument with yourself.
- Cottage Nights — no towers at all. Just you, a farmhouse with boarded windows, and rounds of bugs chewing through the planks. Repair, rearm, and see how many rounds you last. (Our grenades are seed bombs — a flower grows out of every crater. We couldn't resist.)
Take it outside
Phyloca plays perfectly at a desk. But choose Outdoors and your phone's GPS makes your Envoy walk when you walk — your park, your schoolyard, your backyard becomes the battlefield, and the score doubles while the sun is on your face. Walk off one edge of the map and you wrap in on the other. You can even pace the perimeter of your real play area once and the game fits its map to it. Your location never leaves your device — the game says so on the tin, and it's true.
Legendary moments, kept
Games are generous with confetti; they're stingy with memory. When you do something genuinely great in Phyloca — a flawless defense, a deep survival run — the game declares it LEGENDARY, sweeps a cinematic camera around the moment, and records a real video of it, saved in the game for you to rewatch, share, or download. Your best plays shouldn't only live in your retelling.
