GOALBURST — player's guide
Everything on one page: what kind of football game this is, why it's fun, how each way to play works, and the controls.
What kind of game is this?
Goalburst is arcade football — full 11-a-side, in a sunny 3D stadium, seen from the classic TV broadcast angle. It follows the old golden rule of the great pick-up-and-play football games: fun in the first ten seconds, and deep enough to keep you coming back. It is not a simulation. There is no offside and no menus between you and a match — you pick a country and kick off. The only foul is the obvious one: a slide that takes the man instead of the ball — and in your own box, that's a penalty.
What makes it Goalburst and not just "a football game":
- Every goal gets the TV treatment. Score, and the action freezes into a slow-motion spotlight replay that follows the scorer — and the team-mate who passed to them — with glowing ground trails, just like a real broadcast.
- 128 real countries, each with real flag colours, two kits, and a squad whose skin tones reflect the actual country.
- You curl your shots. Keep steering after you kick and the ball bends — the skill that turns a blocked shot into a screamer in the top corner.
Why it's fun
Football games get boring when scoring feels random or the controls fight you. Goalburst is built the other way round: passing aims itself at the team-mate you're pointing at and arrives with the right weight; a quick tap of shoot is a real strike; and the moment you score, the whole stadium — crowd roar, chants, commentary, confetti, fireworks — goes off for you. It rewards the beautiful goal: a first-time finish off a through-ball gets the loudest celebration and the best replay.

The Solstice Cup 🏆
The Solstice Cup is our invented summer world championship — a friendly tournament, not tied to any real competition. It runs the way you'd expect:
- Group stage: 32 teams in 8 groups of 4. You play your three group games; top two in each group go through.
- Knockouts: Round of 16 → quarter-final → semi-final → the final. One-off matches — win or go home.
- Level after 90? A knockout tie goes to golden-goal extra time (next goal wins), and if it's still level, a penalty shoot-out.
- Win it and you get the full trophy-lift celebration; your career screen counts your titles, goals and best run.
The other teams' results are decided fairly and randomly each tournament — no country is secretly "better" than another, so every run feels different and any nation can win.
The ball at your feet — passing, shooting, dribbling
The player you control has a bright ring on the grass under him (cyan for you; magenta for Player 2). That ring always tells you who you're steering — glance at it whenever you lose track.
Passing (it aims for you)
Hold the direction you want the ball to go and press Pass. Goalburst finds the team-mate you're pointing at and plays the ball to their feet with the right pace for the distance — short and crisp up close, firm and fast across the pitch. You don't have to be pixel-perfect; point roughly and it finds the man. A glowing ring under a team-mate shows exactly who the pass will find, so you can swing the stick around until it's on the player you want.
Through balls — the beautiful one
Press Through to slide the ball into space ahead of your most advanced runner, leading them onto it. A through-ball into a striker who's already sprinting is the best goal in the game — and gets the best replay.
Lobs & crosses
Press Lob to loft the ball over defenders. Out wide near the byline it becomes a cross into the box — aim for a team-mate arriving and finish first-time.
Shooting & aftertouch (the skill move)
Hold Shoot to charge — a power bar fills; a quick tap is still a proper strike, a full hold is a rocket. Power is height as well as pace: tap it and the ball stays along the ground, lean on it and the ball climbs towards the top corner where the keeper can't get a hand to it — and overhit it and it clears the bar. Aim across the goal with the stick as you shoot: a light push finds the middle, a firm push finds the corner, and pushing it all the way puts the ball on the post — beautiful when it goes in, wide when it doesn't. If you don't aim at all, your player picks the side of the goal the keeper has left open, so simply running in and shooting is a real chance.
The trick that wins games: after the ball has left your foot, swing the stick the other way and the shot curls — bend it around the keeper into the far corner. Simply holding the way you were already running won't bend it, so you can keep running onto the rebound without ruining your own shot.
First-time finishes & rebounds
You don't have to control the ball before you hit it. If a loose ball is at your feet — a parry off the keeper, a cross dropping in, a scramble in the six-yard box — Shoot smashes it first-time and Pass or Lob clears your lines. First-time strikes are less accurate than a settled shot, which is exactly the trade: hit it now, or take a touch and give the defence a moment.
Sprint & defending
Hold Sprint for a burst of pace (great for chasing a through-ball). Sprinting with the ball pushes it further out of your feet, so it's fast in open space and risky in traffic. On a touch stick, how far you push it sets how fast you run — you can jog into position instead of always tearing about.
When the other team has the ball your controls switch to defending: press Pass (or U) to take the player nearest the ball, and Shoot to put in a standing tackle — a quick poke at the ball that's safe to try. Hold Sprint and press Shoot to commit to a full slide tackle: it covers much more ground, and leaves you on the floor if you miss.
Time it, and the slide is the best tackle in the game. Mistime it and you go through the man instead of the ball — that's a foul, and the referee gives a free kick. So sliding at everything doesn't work: a well-timed slide wins the ball almost every time, while throwing yourself in constantly wins it about one time in five and hands over a stream of free kicks.
Free kicks & penalties
Win a free kick and the opposition has to stand off while you look up. Pass or Lob plays it into a team-mate; within about 30 m of goal, Shoot has a go directly. As with a corner, you get a few seconds to decide.
Foul someone inside your own penalty area and it's a penalty — the same aim-and-power duel as a shoot-out, in the middle of a match. Move the marker to pick your spot, hold Shoot for power and release. Defending one, you commit to a side with the stick as the striker runs up.
Corners
You get a few seconds on a corner, and the stick picks the delivery: push towards the goal line for a near-post ball, away from it to cut one back to the edge of the box, and sideways to choose which side of the six-yard box it lands on. Then Pass or Lob to whip it in — and be ready to finish first-time.
The spotlight replay 🎬
Every goal replays in slow motion from moving TV camera angles — a drone swing, then along the touchline, then behind the goal. A gold ring and trail follow the scorer; a cyan ring and trail follow the assister (the pass before the goal), each tagged with their shirt number. A spectacular save earns the keeper his own short replay too. Enjoy them, or press Skip to get straight back to the action.
The radar & match stats 📊
A little radar at the bottom of the screen shows every player on the pitch in team colours (your player has a white halo) — glance at it to spot a striker in space before you play the through-ball. At half-time and full-time you get the broadcast match stats: shots, shots on target, possession and corners.
Celebrations
The bigger the moment, the bigger the party. An ordinary goal gets confetti and a knee-slide; a screamer, a brace or a last-minute winner adds fireworks and a chant; winning a knockout brings ticker-tape; and lifting the Solstice Cup triggers a full trophy scene with the camera circling your celebrating team under a storm of golden confetti.
Penalty shoot-outs
If a knockout is still level after extra time, it's decided from the spot.
- Taking a penalty: a marker shows where you're aiming — move it with your direction keys/stick, and hold Shoot to build power, release to strike. More power is harder to keep accurate; picking a corner beats blasting it.
- In goal: hold a direction to dive that way as the kicker strikes. Guess right and you're a hero.
128 nations & kits
Pick any of 128 countries from the searchable list (type a name, or filter by continent). Each has real flag colours and two kits; if both teams' colours would clash, Goalburst automatically switches one side to its change kit so you can always tell them apart. Squad skin tones reflect each country's real make-up. There are no real player names or club badges — the footballers are your anonymous eleven.

A thumb-stick on the left to move — how far you push it is how fast you run. The right-hand buttons change with the game: PASS · THRU · LOB · SHOOT while you have the ball, SWITCH · TACKLE the moment you lose it, so you never have to remember which of six buttons applies. Hold SPRINT for pace. Everything works one-handed-per-thumb; the pitch stays fully visible.
2 players, one keyboard
| Player 1 | move WASD · F pass · G shoot · H lob · T through · Q sprint |
|---|---|
| Player 2 | move arrows · K pass · L shoot · I lob · J through · Right Shift sprint |
Settings: difficulty & match length
On the title screen, set the difficulty — Breeze (gentle), Classic (the default), or Legend (sharp, fast defenders and a strong keeper) — and the half length (Short / Classic / Long). Start on Classic; move to Legend once your passing and shooting feel automatic.
Playing a friend online 🌐
No account, no server — you and your friend just swap two short codes (any chat app works; same Wi-Fi connects instantly).
- One of you taps Play a friend online → pick a nation → Create a match. You'll get an invite code (or a link — easiest). Send it to your friend.
- They open the link (or paste the code) → pick their nation → an answer code appears. They send it back.
- You paste their answer → Connect. You're playing.
After full-time, both of you can press Rematch to run it back instantly on the same connection.
Same-network friends connect essentially every time. Across different networks it usually works too; if a particular pair never connects, that's a known internet quirk we'll smooth over in a later update.
Quick tips
- Watch your ring — it's the fastest way to know who you control, especially in a crowd. The smaller ring is the team-mate your pass will find.
- Don't over-hit shots. A placed shot into the corner beats a full-power blast the keeper can reach.
- Learn aftertouch early — bending the ball is the difference between a save and a screamer.
- Use Through (not Pass) when a striker is making a run — you'll play them clean through on goal.
- When defending, tap Pass to grab the closest player, then Shoot for a standing tackle. Save the slide (Sprint+Shoot) for when you really have to stop someone.
- Follow your shot in. Keepers parry, and a rebound can be hammered back first-time before anyone reacts.
- On penalties, place, don't blast — and in goal, commit to a side early.
